Understanding Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry is a minimally invasive way to perform oral surgery, including endodontic and periodontal treatments. We can alter or remove soft and hard tissue using a concentrated beam of light. This type of oral surgery does away with scalpels and sutures because the laser cauterizes as it alters gums and tooth enamel. Laser dentistry can be an appealing option if you're anxious about more advanced dental procedures or are interested in a streamlined recovery process.

Our Extensive Laser Dentistry Offerings

When you meet with our team for the first time, we'll begin by conducting an extensive oral exam. By using x-ray technology, we can better understand the condition of your teeth, gums, and jawbones. Afterward, we'll sit down with you to determine if laser dentistry applies to your oral situation. We'll also take this time to answer any questions you may have. Some of the laser dentistry offerings we provide include:

Frenectomies: A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that releases the frenum, a section of fibrous tissue, under the tongue or upper lip. Frenectomies are typically performed on young children. Once the procedure is complete, a frenectomy can improve the range of motion of their mouths. The improved range of motion can positively impact everything from their ability to latch onto a bottle to the pronunciation of words as they age. We can remove the tissue with little discomfort to your child through laser dentistry. There's also no bleeding, and our laser sterilizes as it contacts tissue, significantly reducing the chance of infection.

Gingivoplasties: A gingivectomy is the surgical removal of the gum tissue in your smile. Typically, a gingivectomy is necessary when your gums have pulled away from your teeth, creating deep pockets. We can also perform gingivectomies if gums are cover too much of your teeth, creating an aesthetically displeasing appearance. By leveraging laser technology, we can remove the necessary gum tissue while reducing your time in the exam chair. The procedure will make your teeth appear more uniform and visible and make it easier for our dental team to access plaque and tartar on the surface of your teeth.

Distal (Proximal) Wedge Procedures: A distal wedge procedure removes any soft tissue covering your hind tooth, also known as the second molar. Typically, distal wedge procedures are performed after wisdom teeth extractions. After an extraction, your body might excessively heal the area, filling the gap left by your tooth and creating additional tissue at the end of your second molar. If left untreated, the additional tissue can create a haven for bacteria and increase the chance of cavities. Through laser dentistry, our team can quickly remove the excess tissue, reducing the chance of issues like tooth decay or gum disease developing.

5 Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Our team will explain what benefits you can expect with laser dentistry during your initial appointment. One of the primary benefits is how little discomfort you'll feel during surgery. It can be an excellent option for patients with dental anxiety as the laser doesn't make sound and emits no vibrations. Some additional benefits you can expect with laser dentistry include, but are not limited to:

  1. Reduced need for anesthesia
  2. Reduced requirement of stitches and sutures
  3. Faster healing times following treatment
  4. Decreased bleeding during and following treatment
  5. Preserve more of your natural tooth

Laser Dentistry FAQs

Many people have not had laser dentistry before and are a little unsure of the unknown. As such, it's normal to have questions about the treatment. Our staff is here to answer your questions and help you decide whether our services are right for your smile. Some frequently asked questions about laser dentistry include:

Is laser dentistry safe?

Laser dentistry is a safe and effective way to perform various surgical procedures. Laser dentistry is approved by the FDA and is safe for patients of all ages, including children and seniors.

In most cases, anesthesia isn't necessary for laser dentistry procedures. The laser doesn't make physical contact with your mouth, so most patients don't need numbing agents during treatment. In addition, the laser's ability to cauterize tissue means there's little to no bleeding following treatment.

With laser dentistry, we may be able to save teeth that would otherwise require extraction. However, it depends entirely on the situation. Some standard procedures where laser dentistry can save teeth include root canal therapy and gum disease treatment.
